![]() ![]() The Twitter sleuths collected evidence by identifying the probable perpetrators through social media check-ins. Authorities released surveillance video of the incident and it wasn’t long before Twitter users pieced the puzzle together. In 2014, two men in Philadelphia were severely beaten by a group of people who made disparaging remarks about the pair’s sexual orientation. There have also been reports of similar events in western countries such as Canada and the United States. The global practice of citizen journalism is aided by transnational media flows which also increases communications within and across cultures. Internet users watched the emotional reunion after a tip-off from a netizen. The microblogging platform was an integral surveillance tool as the group of netizens used volunteered geographic information and neogeography to crowdsource the information. The boy was rescued three years later by the power of Sina Weibo – the Chinese version of twitter. Three-year-old Chinese boy Peng Xinle was abducted outside his family’s shop in Shenzhen. This can be seen in the Abduction of Peng Xinle case study. The investigation examined the research of Dr Cadey Korson which evaluates how technology is an important factor in propagating information and gives evidence to the usefulness of Twitter as a medium to compel citizen journalism. Research conducted by a BCM student suggests that social media can be used to quickly disseminate appeals for information.
